Pre-season in Dolomites

When I made a plan for the trip to the Dolomites, my first thought was that it had to be before the peak of the season because there would be a lot of people, and it would not be possible to enjoy it because of the crowded mountains, restaurants, lakes, etc., but I think that was a wrong decision. I read some articles about the best time to visit the Dolomites, and almost everywhere it was written from mid-June until October, but somehow I went against that and decided on the end of May. The decision was wrong because from 6 days there we had only one sunny day, so that means we went hiking only one day.

First day of our trip, we wanted to visit the lakes Obersee and Anterselva, since our directions were from Germany,  it would make a perfect stop. But the moment we stepped out of our car, the rain started and it was not possible to enjoy it. So we decided the best option was to continue our trip but of course, there was a catch. When you are traveling in that direction, you should be aware that there is a road called Via Passo Stalle that is open only 15 minutes in one hour, so from the direction of Austria, it is open for the first 15 minutes from full hours, for example, from 8 o clock till 8:15, and from the Dolomites direction back to Austria, it is open 15 minutes after a half hour, for example from 7:30 till 7:45. So we continued; it was cold, rainy and we were hungry, so we made a break immediately after that road in restaurant Enzianhütte, and that was great decision, because food was delicious. People were polite, the toilets were clean, and it was really what people need when the first day of a holiday is not going according to plan at all.

The second day, it was also rainy, so we decided just to go and buy some cheese, and the cheese was perfect. Later that day, since the rain stopped, or at least it was not heavy rain, we went to visit the Erd Pyramided - Earth Pyramids. That was a walk of around half an hour, but the view was amazing. When we heard the name Erdpyramiden, we were not sure what to expect, and based on our photo search, we were not so amazed, but when we saw that in real life, it was amazing. And the surprise was also the price of the parking; it was only 2 euros for the whole day (almost everywhere, parking is around 2 euros).

On the third day, we finally had a finally sunny day, so we had planned to do a hike on the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo, but when we got closer, we saw the gate for the parking was closed (8 kilometers before parking) and the walk there was too long, so we did a hike behind Tre Cime , the route called Cadini di Misurina. It was deep, sleeper snow, and it was really tricky and almost dangerous.

The fourth day we did nothing; it was really heavy rain, and anything we googled (museums, shops) was closed. We are not sure why; was it only because of the weather? On the fifth day, we went to the town Bozen and again, it was rainy, but we managed to take a short walk and visit some shops. Almost every person in that area speaks Italian, German, and English, so communication was not an issue. The sixth day, since it was heavy rain, we decided to go home early in the morning. So the conclusion from this trip is: Dolomites are amazing, but we will never go again in May or only in the case where the forecast shows the best weather possible, with 0 rain possible.
